Autism is a state of being.
What is autism? Autism is a state of being that influences thinking and acting of the individual on all levels. This state of being has a neurological origin and is therefore inborn. This neurological origin cannot be changed. What behaviour looks like on the outside, depends on many factors and changes constantly during the course of life of the autistic individual. The autistic person develops in every area of development in a different pace, deviating from the tables you’ll find in pedagogical handbooks. In some areas development will be slower than that of the average person without autism; in other areas, a lot faster. What is often observed in autistic individuals, is the speed of their cognitive development being a lot faster than that of their social development. The child is wise for its age and occupies its mind with matter its peers aren’t even aware of. Due to a different or slower social development, the autistic child will not be accepted by its peers. Other children will think the child is weird or stupid. The child will be seen as dumb, while the opposite is true.
Every autistic person, whether we’re talking core autism, asperger’s syndrome or pdd-nos, and every mental health care professional will answer the question “What is autism?” differently.
